Emergency assignment to TM Sandakan.
Well this week since 27/7/2009 assigned to work at Sandakan till today(4/8/2009). In between I had chance back to Lahad Datu for short rest.
During my stay at Sandakan, I have bit of spare time to have nice QSO with local HAM here with the ICOM V8 that I brought along.
Station contacted: 9W6JE(old friend), 9W2ARF(New contact)
Band V24 145.300MHz which is the simplex channel use by local HAM here.

WHAT IS AMATEUR RADIO
It is fun to use radio. People use radio to talk across town, across country and even across continent. Email, Data, or even images can be send through without any sort of Internet connection.
Other than that Amateur Radio can be called as Amateur Radio Service cause it has it's use on the serious side as an important emergency communication system other than hobby for fun. When all other mean of communications system down or overloaded, ham radio still gets the message through.
Ham Radio is a hobby and also a vital service that has saved lives again and again when regular mean of communication failed.
Who can be HAMS?
There are millions of amateur radio operator round the world. They comes from all walks of life and background, all professions, ages, sexes or just a plain folks. They are united by their interest in wireless communication technologies.
Amateur Radio Bands
We all familiar with the big dial on the AM radio and you will see these frequencies marked and with KHz and these are the AM Broadcast band. In the radio frequency spectrum, all sorts of radio services are located, such as the police, fire department, aircraft, ships etc. Amateur are to allocated to use the spectrum in the groups of frequency in HF(high frequency), VHF(Very high frequency), UHF(Ultra high frequency) and as well as the SHF(Super high frequency) band.
Why need license?
Amateur radio is as old as the radio itself and has been a licensed service till now. Offering pool of self-trained people able to offer backing up emergency communication when needed. Amateur radio is also controlled by international law and agreements. Radio waves do not stop for international borders and the Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission acknowledge the ability of the radio hobby not only to advance radio communication technologies skills, but also to enhance international goodwill.
What is the appeal of ham radio?
Hams are attracted by the ability to communicate across town, country, round the globe or even with astronauts on the International Space Station. Its also a gateway for opening door to new friendships over the air or through participation in one of Amateur radio club throughout Malaysia or International. MARTS(Malaysia Amateur Radio Transmitting Society) is Malaysia's main representing club in IARU Region 3(International Amateur Radio Union).
Hams build and experiment with electronics and well may at the cutting edge of many technologies. Experimenting with communication using a simple computer in the shack for sending images and digital text. Even some HAMS goes for off grid power sources to power their equipment.
Well while these cutting edge technologies gadgets move far ahead, the Morse key may still be on the operating position ready to be in action to communicate in the basic way "MORSE CODE".

DXing at Tanjung Lipat Kota Kinabalu
On the night of 14/7/2009 I was invited by Go(9M6YBG) to join him for HF DXing at Tanjung Lipat, Kota Kinabalu.
Unfortunately both of us didn't bring along our camera, so no pictures taken.
Setup: FT-897, Buddy Pole and power supply was just a lead acid battery.
Mode: Morse Code.

9M4RBK finally operational.
Repeater 9M4RBK at Laban Rata Mount Kinabalu finally operational. This is the best repeater of all cause it situated at 3100m above sea level and can cover up to 95% of Sabah Area regardless of shadow area.
From Lahad Datu just 5watt RF power can easily trigger and hold it. RF Strength receive from it hold steadily between S5 to S7

My Way to Ham Radio.
Sejak kecil, saya dah berminat dalam membuat sendiri kerata mainan bermotor. Cuma masa itu control dengan menggunakan control buatan sendiri mengandungi 2 biji bateri yang bertujuan untuk membuat kereta buatan saya itu boleh forward dan reverse.
Setelah memasuki zaman pekerjaan dengan salah satu syarikat Telekomunikasi besar negara, pengetahuan mengenai elektrik dan elektronik serta komunikasi semakin mendalam. Mujurlah dengan kecekalan, saya tamat pengajian dari UTM dalam bidang yang sama hasil tajaan majikan.
Saya memang berminat dalam wireless atau radio. Cuma masa itu radio sukar diperolehi. Pada tahun 2003, saya terjumpa satu kedai menjual radio FRS jenis Motorola. Dengan tidak berfikir dua kali saya telah membelinya untuk mencuba. Jarak komunikasi dengan FRS ini tidak lah jauh sangat tapi bolehlah sekadar digunakan untuk family semasa membeli-belah di kompleks, picnic, pantai dan lain-lain.
Pada suatu hari pada bulan August 2003 semasa saya hadiri mesyuarat di Kota Kinabalu, saya terjumpa rakan kerja lama yang juga peminat radio amatur 9M6AO, telah memperkenalkan hobi radio amatur kepada saya. Beliau juga telah membawa saya untuk berjumpa Presiden BARC(Borneo Amateur Radio Club) untuk berdaftar sebagai ahli SWL club.
Bermula dari masa itulah saya berusaha membuat ulang kaji untuk menduduki RAE pada Nov 2004. Oleh kerana bidang kerja saya serupa dengan silibus RAE, maka saya telah lulus dengan sekali exam. Pada bulan January 2005 saya telah mendapat lesen peruntukan radas kelas B saya dari SKMM(MCMC) membawa callsign 9W6WST.
Dengan rasa tidak puas hati dan ingin meningkat lebih tinggi dalam Radio Amatur ini, maka saya juga berusaha untuk mempelajari kod Morse selama setahun. Berkat usaha, saya juga lulus dalam ujian mendengar dan menghantar kod morse pada September 2007. Akhirnya pada bulan December tahun yang sama saya telah mendapat lesen peruntukan radas kelas A saya yang membawa callsign 9M6WST.
Sejak dari itu, saya telah aktif di jalur-jalur HF untuk berQSO dengan HAM negara-negara lain. Tidak lupa juga jalur asal 2m yang telah lama menjadi teman semasa saya berada dalam lesen kelas B selama tiga tahun.
Sejak dalam hobi radio amatur ini, rakan-rakan radio amatur yang saya kenal di Lahad Datu ialah; 9M6DK, 9W6OK, 9W6EZT, 9W6MAT dan kemudian rakan baru 9W6CTH.
Dalam masa yang sama juga pada tahun 2007 sekumpulan SWL yang berminat dalam radio telah saya kenal dan kini saya telah menjadi Mentor mereka untuk kawasan Lahad Datu.
